An interview with Master Connie TSE
CEO, Full Black Belt 8th
Dan Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon Association
Limited Master Connie TSE, CEO, Full Black Belt 8th Dan, is bright, elegant and friendly. She takes a serious attitude while practicing and teaching Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon, and has a lot of devotion for her students. Members of Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon Black Belt Club interviewed Master Tse recently. Q:
Master Tse, you spend hours learning and practicing Heng Yue Yen Long
Kwon every day. You help
the Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon Association Limited with administrative work. You
yourself are also a
professional instructor teaching Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon. Don’t you feel bored? A: No. I experience great pleasure in learning and practising Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon. I enjoy teaching the skill very much. It is always my wish to share good things with other people. I therefore take delight in teaching the students the technique of Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon, and impart to them the Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon philosophy. Q:
There are many different forms of martial arts in Hong Kong. Why do
you choose to learn and teach Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon? A: I started learning martial arts at the age of 10. I have learned different styles and followed different instructors. Later I discarded them all. I have decided to follow Grandmaster Au and learn his Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon. The way that Grandmaster Au conducted his classes was very different from those of my other instructors. I remember very well that my mother wanted me to learn martial arts because I was small and weak. Despite the fact that I was the youngest and smallest girl in class the instructors never gave me the care and attention that I needed. They never took my capability ( a little girl’s capability) into consideration. During sparring exercises, the big guys in class rained punches and kicks upon me. I could put up no resistance. The instructors were only interested to teach the “good” students. They never bothered to see how deeply I had suffered. I was frightened away from classes until I came across Grandmaster Au who was (and is) really interested in all his students. He gave each member of the class equal attention, the good students and weaker students alike. Grandmaster Au taught the weaker students how to block, how to avoid a blow or a kick, and how to create opportunities for counter- attacks. Grandmaster Au also insisted on the rule of “touch-and-halt” during sparring exercises, which means that members should practise sparring without hurting their classmates undesirably. Grandmaster Au made me understand that “Yen”(=Benevolence) is above all. This is the reason why I finally decided to follow Grandmaster Au and learn his Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon. Q:
You are a female. You are Full Black Belt 8th Dan of Heng
Yue Yen Long Kwon though. You must be very proud of yourself. Aren’t you? A: Well, I’m an 8th Dan and the CEO of Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon Association Limited. I have taught more than 15000 students. I do notice, however, that I need to work hard, and harder skill, because I am still green. I always remind myself the word “Yue”. “Yue” means without bound. Learning is without bound. Grandmaster Au has a brilliant history in martial arts. This is not only because he has an inborn talent. This is also because he works very hard. Having founded Heng Yue Ten Long Kwon and had students coming from all parts of the world to learn his technique, Grandmaster Au still works hard to refine and to evolve the Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon style. Everyday he practices very diligently to hone his skills and head for a higher level. I am a student of Grandmaster Au. I must follow his way and work hard too. Q:
What would you do when you come across students who want to learn Heng
Yue Yen Long Kwon but have no aptitude for the art at all? A: Students come with a desire to learn Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon for self- defence and body-fitness. I do notice that not every student is talented for the art. We would spend more time and attention to guide these students (and, of course, without affecting other students). I always remind myself the word “Heng” in “Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon”. Heng means “ Perseverance” increasing endeavour, and patience”. Since a student has a desire to learn, we should have the patience to teach. I’ll try my best to bestow upon the students and technique and philosophy.
Grandmaster AU gave his style the name “Heng Yue Yen Long Kwon” not without reason. I will always bear in mind the concept “Heng (Perseverance), Yue (To learn unceasingly), and Yen (Benevolence)”. I am fortunate enough to have selected the right style to learn and am very grateful to Grandmaster AU for his teaching and guidance.
